Typical Males @ Red Rock

It was a pretty busy weekend. The time flew by. Friday we headed to Deb’s for Bruce’s birthday had pizza and homemade ice cream, delicious! And the plan was to leave there and wait in line at Barnes and Noble for Harry Potter, but as everyone knows I pretty much crash at 11pm on Fridays and this one was no exception.

Saturday, Nick left super early to start his tubing/camping trip with some friends. And again, as most of you all know camping just isn’t my thing. Not a real nature-girl. Super-8 is about as close as I get to camping. So, while Nick was soaking in the sun, I headed to Red Rock to see Tim and Jon play. Every year a mutual friend of my parents throws this semi-private birthday party and have local musicians play. He also has incredible BBQ catered in. This year Tim and Jon (Typical Males) opened and were fantastic. They were much more comfortable with the situation and Tim did a great job story telling. Of course, they performed the classics, Red & Super Dick, added a new song, Springtime in Altoona and then closed it with Jesus & Elvis. It was great. Afterwards Bejae Fleming sang, who has a terrific voice. Then Iowa blues legend Joe Price performed and Vicki, joined him a little later. They were so awesome. And then closing was Brother Trucker; I stayed for little over half their set.

It was really fun to listen to all these great acts in a beautiful, relax setting. However, the only “bad” thing was I brought Evie and even though park rules are to have all dogs on leashes, someone brought their two dogs and let them run. Which, of course stressed Evie out and when they came near her she attacked. It’s too bad; I think she would have had a great time.

Sunday, Nick got back and he was a lobster, but had a great time. We had lunch with Grandma, then cards with Great Grandma. And for dinner we made Turkey burgers on the new grill and they were super fantastic. I can’t believe it took us this long to get a grill. We also bought a set of nice pans.

Marry me John McClane

Oh, how I love you so. The knight in shinning armor who doesn’t just save the princess, but also destroys all evil in the kingdom with a semi-automatic weapon. He’s a cowboy in a very digital world. His timing and placing are incredible, lucky for the world, unlucky for him. He had me at the first “Yippee Ki Yay”.

Die Hard, the original is truly amazing. I don’t know why I love all the meaningless violence or why all hate for Hans Gruber, but I do. Seriously, I remember watching this film over and over at my grandparents’ house and even my grandma liked it. It was one of my Christmas movies (you know the movies you stick In around that time of year to get you in the spirit). It had all the right elements for me. German terrorists, who actually end up being thieves. Lovable Sgt. Al Powell with LAPD who is the stereotype cop with Twinkies. Nakatomi Plaza, the perfect building for a hostage situation. Limo driver Argyle, who parties and kills. The unbearable walking on broken glass scene, that still makes me shiver. John showing up at the last minute to rescue Holly while shooting Hans who starts to fall out of the building, but becomes stuck on Holly’s watch…oh the cliffhanger, finally falling 32 stories to his death. Brilliant.

Die Hard 2, was (brief pause) different. As a sequel it was good, as a Die Hard sequel it failed. The plane crash was pretty crazy and disturbing and John McClane did not disappoint. The third installment just didn’t work for me, although most fans enjoyed it.

However, this weekend, John McClane returned to his very brutal, ass-kicking self in Live Free or Die Hard. He had a very unexpected, but good sidekick, hacker William Farrell and the plot was very interesting. However, I’m there for the action and it delivered, Nick thought at one point it went a little extreme, I enjoyed the outrageous and very unrealistic stunts, that is what I expect from John McClane. The cussing was at a minimum which was the most shocking…this isn’t suppose to be a family-friendly flick this is terrorist-killing, guns flaring, shit blowing up kind of movie. We need the f-bombs. Even when John unleashes the famous “Yippee Ki Yay” he doesn’t end with “mother-fucker”. WHAT! And that is why it was rated PG-13 and not R like the rest. Only one “fuck” was used throughout the film. Other than that, the movie is a great summer film and I highly recommend it if you enjoyed the first Die Hard.

So the last week has been just wacky.
Some highlights have been the Art Fest, where I absolutely loved the K-12 art tent. It was so awesome and inspiring. It seriously almost had me in tears. I missed out on the complete “Starry Night”, but what are you gonna do?

Speaking of Art, we went to Hobby Lobby were I got a great deal on photo albums and a shadow box. Goal this weekend is to complete the shadow box.

We also seen Sicko, which was disturbing to say the least. Highly recommend it, super scary what the health care system is really like in the USA.

And then right in the middle of the week, Fourth of July. Being on Wednesday kind of sucked…not going to lie. Tuesday night we went to my mom’s house. Had a fantastic time. She made the best damn BBQ ever! We hung out, messed with sparklers, played games, the sisters got wild…it was awesome. Wednesday day pretty much was a wash. I apparently couldn’t get my butt out of bed and Nick had some work to do, so it wasn’t until 5pm that we started the day together. We met up with some friends, tailgated for the ICubs game and then saw incredible fireworks. It was a fun night.

And in other very important news…our ceiling fan is up! Dad hung it for me for my birthday, I love it.

Finally, we got a new point-and-shoot camera…this weekend was my first time using it (and it shows) so, I apologize for the grainy or blurry pictures!
